Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Japan, mainly for the iconic cherry blossoms. Cherry blossom season typically peaks in late March to early April. In springtime, you’ll have pleasant weather with mild temperatures, which is why it’s a good time for outdoor activities and exploring gardens.

Winter (December to February)

Skiing and winter sports in northern regions like Hokkaido and Nagano are becoming very popular among foreign visitors to Japan. They come from as far as Australia, Europe and North America. Last season (2022/23), many wealthy European skiers flocked to Hokkaido when the Alps had one of its worst snow seasons in recent memory. Winter is the season when many Japanese go to Okinawa to escape harsh winter weather on the Main Islands.

Keep in mind that Japan’s climate can vary greatly by region due to its length and geography. For instance, Hokkaido is much colder than Okinawa during the winter. To choose the best time for your trip, consider your interests, what you’d like to experience, and any specific activities or festivals you want to attend. Also, take into account your tolerance for different weather conditions and crowds, as peak seasons can be busy, especially during cherry blossom season.
